Welcome to AddictMUD!

First and foremost, this FAQ can in no way explain every question you may have, that is why it is frequently asked questions. Typing ‘help’ will give you a list of the commands available to you. To get better answers to questions you might have that this FAQ doesn't go into, please use the helpfile. The helpfile can be accessed by typing help <topic> (i.e. help say).

Please look here first, then the helpfile, then if you still have questions, feel free to ask any Immortal or use the gossip channel, many mortals will also be glad to answer questions for you.

Before you start the game, you will probably want to type 'policy' and read a written detail of AddictMUD's policies.

What are the different channels used for?

Newbie: New players can only communicate with the rest of the mud by using this channel. The gossip channel is available when the player reaches level 3.

Gossip: Used to talk to everyone on the mud who is monitoring that channel. Usually used for idle chit chat or asking directions or questions.

Chat: Chat is a channel that anyone can enter, but only those players that are currently in that channel can hear each other talk. The default chat channel is chat < 0 >.

Say: used to talk to everyone in the room.

Shout: used to talk to other players in the zone you are in.

Tell: used to talk to only the person you wish to speak to, in other words, no one else will see what you are saying.

Auction: used for the sale or purchase of equipment by other players to other players.

Note: Some of the public channels allow you to view a history of the last 15 things that were said on that channel. To view this log, just type the channel of communication (i.e. typing gossip will bring up the gossip log).

What do these numbers on my screen mean?

Those numbers are your prompt. The default settings are hitpoints, mana, and move points. Your prompt is customizable. Type HELP PROMPT to see the options available to you.

How do I see my stats?

Typing attributes or the abbreviation attrib will show you your stats. Stats are not available until you reach level 5. You will receive a stat for strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution and charisma. You can get a description of each stat by using the help file. A perfect stat on AddictMUD is 18.

How do I know what mobs I can kill?

There is a command called consider or abbreviated con. If you see a mob, type 'con (mob name)' and it should give you a helpful hint as to whether or not you should attack that mob. Another thing you can do is to recite an identify scroll on the mob to give you more detailed information about the mob. Identify scrolls can be bought in all hometown magic shops.

How do I find my way around?

The most exciting way to learn a new mud is to explore. The command 'autoexits' will display the exits from the room you are in. Typing 'exits' or 'ex' will tell you what these exits lead to.

Some areas also have maps. You can also type 'help (town)' for any of the three hometowns on AddictMUD. Each will show you a map of that town.

Connecting towns are reachable only by walking between them.

I’m hungry and thirsty, but I have no food and my canteen is empty. What do I do?

You can refill your canteen at the fountain located in each hometown. Type fill canteen fountain. All towns have shops that sell food. Use the list command to see what the merchant has for sale.

What do I do if I die?

AddictMUD requires you to go retrieve your corpse where you died in order to get your equipment back. Go back to where you died and type 'get all corpse' and this will give you your things. However if you wait too long your corpse will dissolve and your equipment will be left lying on the ground. Notice when this happens, mobs may pick up your equipment or other players. So getting to your corpse in a timely fashion is recommended.

(Player corpses decay in 20 minutes)

How do I use the library?

AddictMUD has a feature called the library, which allows you to transport directly into certain areas of the MUD. In each room of the library is a certain book. To enter a book you must type 'read (book title)' [ex: read newbie]. It is recommended that you take a scroll of recall with you to get back into the main area of the MUD when you are finished. Scrolls can be purchased at the Magic Shop in town.

(Most books allow you to recall now by using the recall command. However, if you can't recall from an area you entered in through a book it probably means it is on loan from another library.)

How do I know what spells, skills, and powers do?

The spells for your class can be listed by typing 'spells'. The skills for your class can be listed by typing 'skills'. The powers for your class can be listed by typing 'powers'. Note: Currently, only Psionicists have powers. The spells, skills, powers currently available to you can be listed by typing practice, this command will list all spells, skills, and powers available to your class at your current level.

Typing 'help (spell name)' will describe the spell to you.

How do I learn my skills, spells or powers?

All skills, spells and powers must be practiced with your guildmaster located at your guild in town. Type ‘prac’ to see a list of what is available for you to learn. You will receive practices every time you level. The number of practices you receive is based on your wisdom stat. The number of times you must practice is determined by your intelligence stat.

How do I set an alias?

Setting aliases for actions frequently typed, or too long to type can making your MUDding experience more enjoyable. They require you to only type one word or a few letters to represent a command.

Typing "help alias" will show you the proper way to set up an alias.

How can I tell what equipment does?

In the magic stores, there are scrolls of identify. Purchasing them and then using them on the object in question will inform you of the properties of the object. (i.e. recite identify dagger)

What are Death Traps? (or DT)

A death trap is a room where you have a chance to loose a portion your equipment. You cannot regain any equipment lost in a death trap, it is gone forever. Usually Death Trap rooms have titles that are quite obviously death traps, like "Eaten alive by Large Cannibals" or something. Some aren't so clearly named, if you are unsure about an exit, look in that direction. DT's are parts of the MUD, they happen.

How do I get to the Newbie zone?

This depends on what town you choose for a hometown.

Adrilankha: There is a newbie zone located in the Library. The Library is located w, s, s, s, e, e, n from Verra's Temple. Go into the Children's section and find the book entitled "Newbie Zone." Then 'read newbie'. Also any IMM on may help direct you to an area you can handle.

New Thalos: The newbie zone is located in the library. To get to the library, go north from market square, east along north gate, south from guard tower. The library is on the west side. Go into the Children's section and find the book entitled "Newbie Zone." Then type 'read newbie.' Any IMM on may help direct you to an area you can handle.

Skara Brae: Froboz's Factory is a great place for new players. To get there from the crossroads of Port Street and Gashon Road, go 4 west, and 4 north.

How do I level?

Leveling is automatic when you have enough experience. If you don't want to autolevel, typing 'autolevel' will change the trigger back to manual. If you do this, you must type 'gain' to level. There is no penalty for not automatically leveling, however, in the lower levels you do gain more experience per kill as you level.

How do I get better equipment?

Upon entering the game you are given a set of newbie equipment. As you progress, you will kill mobs wielding, wearing or carrying better equipment. Also, players donate equipment they don’t need or want. These objects end up in the Donation Room. One is located in each hometown.

Do I have to rent?

Yes. Rent is free, but in order to store your equipment, you must rent at a receptionist or cryogenicist.

Adrilankha: A receptionist can be found West, West, North, from Verra's Temple.

New Thalos: The inn is 4 north, 1 east from center market square.

Skara Brae: From Welcome Center, east, south, south, south, east, east, north, up.

What about Player Killing [PK]?

AddictMUD is not a player killing mud, so don't do it. Such actions will be dealt with by a GOD. Any player caught killing another PC will be flagged and warned. Any player with a KILLER flag will be unable to do any damage in battle. Present policy says that 3 warnings will result in a freeze. However, this is only a "guideline", and we reserve the right to deal with the situation as they see fit.

Your best decision would be to just avoid killing other pc's.

Note: The only exception to this policy is during a "Total Carnage" Quest. Before these quests are held, all players are 'saved.' For a specific period of time, it's a free-for-all killing spree. When the quest has ended, all players are restored to the 'pre-quest' state so no equipment is lost.

How do I know if another player is killing in the zone I'm in?

Typing 'where' will give you the location of all the players currently in your zone.

What are forums?

Forums are a bulletin board type of system that all players are allowed to read/post on. There are forums for many different topics. You can also use a forum from anywhere on the mud, thus you don't have to be in the same room as a forum like you do bulletin boards. The forums are also entwined with this bulletin boards, thus if you post on the bulletin board, it gets transferred to the forum and vice versa. You should type "help forum" to get more help on the usage of forums.
